Learning the Craft

Conducting course with Jorma Panula
Project

Learning as an attitude.

“A conductor must allow the orchestra to breathe. Not lead—but accompany.”

Finnish conductor Jorma Panula is regarded as one of the most important conducting teachers of our time. His students include figures such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Osmo Vänskä—conductors who now lead the world’s great orchestras.

The Colla Parte Foundation enabled a small group of young conductors to work directly with Panula during an intensive course lasting several days. The focus was not technique, but listening: the ability to speak with the orchestra rather than at it.
